{"id":394,"date":"2020-04-13T22:24:20","date_gmt":"2020-04-13T14:24:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/museum2.lib.nctu.edu.tw\/?page_id=394"},"modified":"2020-12-16T22:01:20","modified_gmt":"2020-12-16T14:01:20","slug":"plum-versus-bamboo-tournament","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/museum.lib.nycu.edu.tw\/?page_id=394&lang=en","title":{"rendered":"Plum versus Bamboo Tournament"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The Plum versus Bamboo Tournament\uff08\u6885\u7af9\u8cfd\uff09 is a sport competition used to promote friendship between NCTU\uff08\u570b\u7acb\u4ea4\u901a\u5927\u5b78\uff09 and National Tsing Hua University\uff08\u570b\u7acb\u6e05\u83ef\u5927\u5b78\uff09, a neighboring university with a similar background of excellence in national science and engineering. The competition is comparable to the Oxford and Cambridge boat race. The two school have held the event since March of 1969. The Tournament shows the unending camaraderie and cooperation between the two schools.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Why is it called Plum versus Bamboo Tournament? The word &#8220;Plum&#8221; refers to Tsing Hua University, taken from the name of one of their presidents Yi-Chi Mei, whose name contain the Chinese word &#8220;Mei&#8221; for plum. The plum also represents independence and purity. The word &#8220;Bamboo&#8221;, on the other hand, refers to our University, taken from our president Hung-Hsun Ling&#8217;s given name &#8220;Chu-Ming&#8221;. The word &#8220;Chu&#8221; means bamboo, symbolizing gentlemanly honor, and the magnificence of a great nation.
