University Song

The university song is an important symbol that unites faculty and students while reflecting the spirit of the university. Each song serves as a mark of its era. In 2021, National Yang Ming Chiao Tung University (NYCU) was established through the merger of National Yang Ming University (NYMU) and National Chiao Tung University (NCTU). The following introduces the songs of NYCU, NYMU, and NCTU, tracing the history and cultural heritage of the schools through their melodies and lyrics.

After two years of a public call for submissions and review, the song “Together, we go far,” composed by Associate Professor Chu-Lan Kao of the Institute of Statistics, was selected by the University Affairs Meeting as the official university song. The lyrics preserve the rich cultural heritage of both NYMU and NCTU and express aspirations for NYCU, showcasing the continuation of the spirit of the two predecessor universities and the beginning of a new chapter. The song was officially unveiled at the university’s fourth-anniversary celebration on February 22, 2025.

Approved at the 7th College Affairs Meeting of National Yang-Ming Medical College on September 15, 1975, the song was composed by Harry S. Mason, and the lyrics were written by the first dean, Paul Han, who also incorporated the university motto “benevolent mind and art, putting knowledge into practice” into the lyrics.

This song was composed when National Yang-Ming Medical College became National Yang-Ming University (NYMU). In September 1991, the “School Song Production Committee” was established to solicit lyrics from faculty, students, and alumni.

The lyrics were collectively written by alumni, including Yung-Fa Lin, and polished by Professor Show-Foong Chang. They not only capture the campus scenery and founding spirit of NYMU, but also express the school’s expectations of its students and its own requirements.

The music was composed by Chien-Tai Chen, who was a professor of theoretical composition at the University of Maryland at that time, after visiting NYMU campus and interviewing students.

When NCTU was re-established in Taiwan in 1958, it continued to use the original campus song from the Shanghai campus. In 1975, Mr. Ching-Lai Shen, Dean of the College of Engineering, announced new lyrics to replace the old ones (written by Executive Secretary Prof. Tien-Chien Chou; the melody remained unchanged). Later, as the number of colleges, departments, and institutes gradually increased, those lyrics were no longer appropriate. Therefore, on June 9, 1999, the University Affairs Meeting approved a proposal made by NCTU President Chun-Yen Chang to revert to the original lyrics used at the Shanghai campus, and the song was composed by Prof. Yu-Mei Hsiao.

In June 2001, the faculty and students at the Institute of Music of NCTU used the melody of the university song as material to compose seven different vocal and instrumental versions, entitled “Su Yuan Sung,” thereby adding aesthetic value to the song and making its interpretations more colorful.
