1896 Founded to be one of the two oldest Chinese universities established according to the Western education system.

The First Colleges and Departments

1897 The first to establish a teacher training system — a complete new education system from the primary to university levels

1907 The first in China to establish a program of instruction in electrical engineering

1918 The first to establish a higher education system combining engineering and management

1926 Established China’s first graduate school: Institute of Industry, Nanyang University

1958 Established ROC’s first Institute of Electronics

1964 Established ROC’s first Department of Electro-physics

1965 Established ROC’s first Department of Automatic Control

1966 Established ROC’s first Department of Communication Engineering

1979 The first to establish an Institute of Computer (Information) Engineering

1980 The first to establish an Institute of Electro-Optical Engineering

1991 The first to establish an Institute of Management Technology

1994 Established ROC’s first College of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science

1999 Established ROC’s first Department of Biological Science and Technology

2000 Established ROC’s first Institute of Technology Law
